Probably Stolen Vending Machine: How to Get It and What Sells Overnight

How to unlock the Vending Machine in Probably Stolen, the sale chance formula, what to stock, which upgrades matter, and what the machine refuses to sell.

Quick answer

Get it as a 2-point starting perk or for 1,200 favor in Wild’s Network. It sells cheap food best: a 20-credit item has about a 20% nightly chance at the starting attractiveness. Stock many different items, because each extra copy of the same item halves its chance.

Plan your stock

The Vending Calculator shows the nightly chance for any item, and what attractiveness upgrades would add.

How to get it

Take the Vending Machine starting perk for 2 points, or buy it in the Store section of Wild's Network for 1,200 favor. The Vending Fountain is a separate 1,200-favor upgrade for water.

What sells overnight

The nightly chance is:

attractiveness × type multiplier × 200 ÷ (200 + price)

Item typeMultiplier
Food, drinks, water rations, treats×1.5
Other items under 100 credits×1
Energy cells, tools×0.5
Other items from 100 to 200 credits×0.5
Materials×0.33
Other items above 200 credits×0.25
Luxury items×0.165
Modules, nodes, gun mods, chem supplies×0.15

A 20-credit food item sells 20.5% of the time at attractiveness 15, and more than once a night at 100. A 300-credit item only reaches 10% even at attractiveness 100, so cheap food wins.

How many should you stock?

The second copy of an item has half the chance, the third a quarter, and so on. Ten different snacks will outsell ten of the same one.

You're also guaranteed at least 1 sale a night, 2 at attractiveness 25 and 3 at 50. Those come from non-luxury items worth 50 credits or less.

Prices and rules

You can't set your own price, though at least one player has asked for it. Items sell at their value plus your retail markup plus 10%, and event price changes don't apply. Save event stock for the counter.

The machine won't take contraband, items you don't own, containers, machines, or liquids other than wine. Your money stays inside until you press Transfer All. Selling mislabeled goods this way counts as fraud, and costs Lower and Upper Levels reputation.

Upgrades

UpgradeMaterialEffectEnergy
CapacityMetal Ingot+1 row of 8 slots, from 2 up to 12 rows+1 a night per row
AttractivenessElectronic Parts (Common)+5, from 15 up to 100None

The base machine uses 2 energy a night, and a drained battery means no sales. Attractiveness doesn't raise your energy use, so buy it first.
