Probably Stolen Breeding Guide: Rats, Fish and What to Select For

How rat breeding works in Probably Stolen: Growth, Hunger and Immunity targets, the Gene Scanner, when to cull, steroid serum, cage care, and how fish farming compares.

Quick answer

Select males first, keeping those with higher Growth, higher Immunity or lower Hunger. Size follows Growth. Players aim for Hunger in the 30s and Immunity of 50 or more. The developers call fish slower, lower maintenance and friendlier to beginners than rats.

Run your numbers

The Rat Calculator shows meat value at any weight, and estimates feed cost.

How solid is this?

The numbers come from guide sites and a few players' runs. Nobody has published how hunger converts to kcal, or how much fish eat a day.

Why 400 g matters

Meat is cut into fixed pieces, so a few grams can change the value a lot.

PieceBase value
400 g159
200 g65
100 g30
50 g15

Any remainder adds another 50 g piece. A 351 g rat is worth 125, a 400 g rat 159, and a 401 g rat 174. Disease counts only 75% of the weight, so a diseased 400 g rat is worth 95.

What each stat does

StatWhat it doesTarget
GrowthSets size and how fast rats reach itStart breeding at 1.4
HungerHow much they eatThe 30s
ImmunityResistance to disease50+ for disease, 100+ for everything
HealthSurvive disease or overcrowding longerNot vital
LongevityExtends elderly status from 10 days to as much as 13Not vital

Size tracks Growth closely. One player reports a Growth 1.4 rat reaching 400 g by day 4, enough for a standard cut and a nibblet, and Growth 1.6 or more giving large rats by day 8 or 9.

How to breed better rats

Early generations look identical, and differences appear after a generation or two. Exact numbers stay hidden without a Gene Scanner, which the Inventor stocks once Rat Ranching is unlocked. On the scanner, green marks a favorable low Hunger Rate and red an unfavorable high one.

One player's routine:

  1. Select males first, keeping those with better Growth, Immunity or Hunger.
  2. Keep one top male about every 2 days, so the breeder cage holds 3 or 4 males spaced apart in age.
  3. Start with Growth 1.4 females, then shift focus to the other stats.
  4. Send weak males to the feeder box.

Females last 2 or 3 birth cycles, with the last litter at around 9 days old. Don't expect offspring to beat their best parent: in one recorded litter, a 1.46 mother and a 1.15 father produced 1.30 to 1.37 offspring.

Keep a second cage so breeders stay separate from meat rats. After all that, the same player concluded that more rats beat better rats.

Feeding

Rats have 500 hunger and lose about 65 a night. Newborns start at 125. They look for food below 375, and a feed dispenser fills them to 425 by default. Growth slows below 400, and starving can cause miscarriages.

A Livestock Feed Dispenser costs 300, uses no power and stores 40,000 kcal. Its Blend button turns food into calories, and Auto Blend is off by default. Rats won't eat fish feed.

Peat25800

Sources disagree on Peat: one says caged animals won't eat it, and another says rats eat it only through the dispenser. One recorded run fed 5 adult rats about 1,200 to 1,440 kcal a night.

Crowding starts when animals fill over 55% of the cage cells, and it gets worse above 70% and 90%.

Steroid serum

Livestock Steroid Serum raised one rat's Growth by about 20%, but raised its Hunger Rate by about 50% and lowers immunity. Check health before you continue, and don't assume boosted Growth passes to offspring.

Cages and care

Metal Ingot expansions add capacity and 20 durability each. Scrap repairs restore 50% of max durability, and large living rats wear the cage out. Watch for overcrowding, which injures rats.

Animals pass through Infant, Juvenile, Adolescent, Adult and Elder stages. Elders eat a lot compared to the meat they add.

Selling meat

Harvest with a Meat Cleaver. A 500 g rat gave a Steak in one run. Private Chefs buy rat meat, but budgets are limited, so you may need to store some. Food prices also rose about 30% as one run's colony grew, so count feed before you expand.

Fish farming

The developers describe aquaculture as slower, lower maintenance and more beginner friendly than rat ranching. The Aquafarmer start gives you a basic circulation system, tilapia and fish food.

  • Manage water quality, filtration and the energy cell so tanks keep circulating.
  • With good conditions, fish lay and fertilize roe, which hatches into fry.
  • More valuable species include eels and sturgeon, each with its own habitat needs.
  • Use a knife to butcher fish, and Surgery Tools to harvest caviar from sturgeon.

A tank holds 12,000 mL, and fish die if water falls below half of what they need. Organic waste starts to hurt at 3% of the water and kills at 8%. A power cut costs each fish 34% of its max health per night.

Fish feed adds up, according to one player, though they hadn't run the numbers. Another suggests keeping 4 elders and slaughtering them just before retirement age to collect fertilized roe.
